Palliative Care Training Opportunities

PALLIATIVE CARE RESOURCE NURSE COURSE – MELBOURNE

For Registered Nurses Division 1 and Division 2 (medication endorsed)

Nurses who complete the Palliative Care Resource Nurse will have up to date knowledge on how to assess symptoms experienced by patients’ receiving palliative care. They will be well versed on the latest and best evidenced based practice treatments both pharmacological and non-pharmacological for managing symptoms in palliative care patients. They will also be well versed in how to provide excellent psychosocial support to patients with a life threatening illness and their families.

The course is delivered face to face by the facilitators at Banksia Palliative Care Service over six study days. Each study day runs from 9am to 4.30pm. Students will have prescribed pre-readings to complete prior to each study day on the topics covered.

Topics include:·

  • Assessment and management of cancer and non-cancer related pain
  • Assessment and management of other symptoms including nausea, delirium, terminal restlessness and dyspnoea
  • How to convert common opioids such as Oxycodone to Morphine
  • Important information about using syringe drivers in palliative care
  • Palliative chemotherapy and radiotherapy
  • Communicating with patients and their families
  • Anticipatory Grief
  • Psychosocial support for patients and families
  • Spirituality
  • Role of complimentary therapies i.e. massage and music therapy in palliative care

 

Sessions

Participants need to complete two days clinical placement in a palliative inpatient setting or with a specialist community based palliative care service such as Banksia Palliative Care Service and various assessments in order to successfully complete this course.

Registered Nurses (Division 1) who successfully complete all of course assessments and attend at least 75% of study days will receive 12.5 credit points towards The University of Melbourne Postgraduate Diploma in Cancer / Palliative Care Nursing Studies.

Semester 2: Wed 9th Aug, Thu 10th Aug, Wed 6th of Sept, Thu 7th of Sept, Wed 11th of Oct & Thu 12th of Oct

Investment: $1330 (inclusive of GST valid until 1 Dec 2017) required in full prior to commencement, payable on invoice.

PALLIATIVE CARE ESSENTIALS – 1 DAY SHORT COURSE

The short course is for personal care attendants, lifestyle staff, staff working in aged care and those with a special interest in palliative care. Attendees who attend the course will have knowledge and skills on how to provide evidence based care to residents. They will also know how to support residents’ family members.

The course covers the essential aspects of palliative care including:

  • Philosophy of Palliative Care and a Palliative Approach
  • Physical care of residents during end of life
  • Pain Recognition and Assessment
  • Terminal Restlessness
  • Communicating with Residents and their Family Members
  • Cultural Considerations & End of Life Care

Dates:  Thursday the 2nd of March, Thursday 1st of June, Thursday the 16th of Nov

Time:    0930 – 1600hrs

ONSITE PALLIATIVE CARE TRAINING

Banksia offers onsite training to Aged Care Facilities, Hospitals and Community Health Services on a range of different palliative care topics according to the facilities specific palliative care training needs. Common topics include Pain Assessment and Management, Physical Care, Communication, Advanced Care Planning and Use of Syringe Drivers in Palliative Care.

All attendees are issued a certificate of attendance.
